🏹 1. Dussehra 2026 Date, Dashami Tithi & Vedic Calendar Timings
Dussehra (Vijayadashami), the glorious Sanatan Hindu festival celebrating the supreme victory of righteousness (Dharma) over adharma, light over ignorance, and the vanquishing of the ten-headed demon king Ravana by Lord Sri Rama, will be celebrated across India and worldwide on Tuesday, 20 October 2026.
In the sacred Vedic lunar calendar (Vikram Samvat 2082/2083), Vijayadashami falls on the tenth day of the waxing moon phase—known as Aaso Sud Dasham in Gujarat, Maharashtra, and Southern India (Amanta system), and as Ashwin Shukla Dashami in Northern India (Purnimanta system). Both calendars coincide on this sacred date.

Classical Vedic Tithi Rule: In ancient scriptures such as the Dharmasindhu and Nirnayasindhu, Vijayadashami celebrations, Shami worship, and Ravana effigy burning are prescribed for when Dashami tithi prevails during Aparahna Kaal (the afternoon period) and the evening Pradosh Kaal. Because Dashami touches sunrise and prevails throughout the morning of Tuesday, October 20, 2026, all major public and domestic observances are celebrated on Tuesday, October 20, 2026.
👑 2. Vijay Muhurat & Aparahna Kaal: Supreme Planetary Alignment for Victory
In Jyotish Shastra, the solar day is split into 15 equal diurnal Muhurats. The afternoon Muhurat occurring between the 8th and 11th intervals is known as Vijay Muhurat. Classical lore states that Maryada Purushottam Lord Rama launched his campaign against Ravana during this precise celestial window.
Any constructive endeavor—inaugurating a commercial enterprise, entering into contracts, buying immovable property, buying gold, or inaugurating machinery—initiated during Vijay Muhurat receives immense planetary vitality. 🌿 4. Sacred Shami Tree (Khijdo) & Aparajita Puja Vidhi
In Western India and Gujarat, the Shami tree (Prosopis cineraria) is affectionately known as Khijdo. According to the Mahabharata, after completing twelve years of forest exile, the Pandavas concealed their celestial weapons (Gandiva bow and divine arms) in the hollow of a sacred Shami tree before entering their one-year incognito exile (Agyatvas) in the Matsya kingdom.
Upon completing their disguise without detection on Ashwin Shukla Dashami, they worshipped the Shami tree, retrieved their weapons, and subsequently vanquished the Kauravas at Kurukshetra. Ever since, Shami worship on Vijayadashami has been considered essential for removing enmity and attaining triumph:
- Exchanging 'Gold' (Shami Leaves): On Dussehra evening, it is an enduring cultural custom to pluck clean Shami leaves and present them to elders, family, and neighbors with the phrase "Take gold and live like gold." This ritual reconciles grievances and fosters goodwill.
- Aparajita Devi Puja: Drawing an eight-petaled lotus (Ashtadal Kamal) in the northeast direction of the home and invoking Goddess Aparajita ensures that no malevolent energies, disputes, or financial blockages enter the household.
⚙️ 5. Ayudha Puja (Shastra & Vahan Pujan) & Jalebi-Fafda Tradition
Vijayadashami is deeply tied to gratitude for the tools of our livelihood. Craftsmen, artisans, engineers, drivers, doctors, and students clean and consecrate their instruments—vehicles, machinery, computers, pens, and musical instruments—in a rite known as Ayudha Puja.
New Vehicle Consecration (Vahan Pujan): Dussehra is an Abujh Muhurat (inherently auspicious without needing elaborate horoscope examination). Thousands purchase new cars, two-wheelers, and commercial vehicles on this day. The vehicle is washed, decorated with marigold garlands, marked with a kumkum Swastik, lemons placed under wheels, and a coconut offered at a local temple.

🔥 6. Ravan Dahan: Conquering the 10 Negative Indriyas & Ayurvedic Wisdom
At dusk during Pradosh Kaal, towering effigies of Ravana, Kumbhakarna, and Meghnad filled with eco-friendly firecrackers are consigned to flames. Spiritually, Ravana's ten heads represent the ten toxic human impulses: Lust (Kama), Anger (Krodha), Delusion (Moha), Greed (Lobha), Pride (Mada), Envy (Matsarya), Selfishness (Ahamkara), Injustice (Anyaaya), Cruelty (Amanavata), and Egotism (Ahankara). Burning the effigy is a solemn pledge to eliminate these destructive tendencies.
Ayurvedic Logic of Jalebi and Fafda: In Gujarat, eating piping hot crispy fafda, sweet syrupy jalebis, fried green chilies, and papaya sambharo on Dussehra morning is celebrated. Beyond celebration, Ayurveda notes that after nine days of Navratri fasting and seasonal cooling of Sharad Ritu, internal Pitta dosha elevates. Alkaline chickpea flour (Besan) combined with sweet jalebi cools accumulated bodily heat and restores metabolic balance.
