📖 Sacred Vrat Katha (Full Narrative)

Lord Shiva narrated this sacred episode to Mata Parvati, recounting her previous incarnation as the daughter of King Himavat. Parvati was steadfast in her desire to marry Lord Shiva, but her father arranged her marriage to Lord Vishnu.

Heartbroken, Parvati confided in her close companion, who stealthily escorted her into a secluded forest to protect her vow. Since she was abducted ('harita') by her friend ('aalika'), the fast came to be celebrated as 'Hartalika'. Living upon dry leaves, she shaped a Shivalinga from river sand and worshipped it with fragrant Kevda leaves on Bhadrapada Shukla Tritiya. Moved by her unwavering tapasya, Lord Shiva manifested before her and granted her wish.
