📖 1. Rushi Panchami 2027 Date, Vedic Panchang & Auspicious Tithi
Rushi Panchami (ઋષિ પંચમી / ऋषि पंचमी / Sama Pancham) is one of the most spiritually sanctifying, introspective observances in Sanatan Dharma, celebrated annually on the day immediately following Ganesh Chaturthi. In 2027, Rushi Panchami will be observed on Sunday, 5 September 2027 (*Bhadrapada Shukla Panchami / ભાદરવા સુદ પાંચમ*).
Unlike other Hindu festivals dedicated to the Trimurti or Divine Mother, Rishi Panchami is dedicated exclusively to the reverence and worship of the Saptarshis (સપ્તર્ષિ—The Seven Primordial Vedic Sages) and Mata Arundhati. It is also celebrated across Gujarat and Maharashtra as Sama Pancham (સામા પાંચમ) due to its unique agricultural and culinary tradition of eating wild, naturally grown grains.
According to the Drik Siddhanta Vedic Ephemeris, Bhadrapada Shukla Panchami tithi commences on Saturday, 4 September 2027 at 12:26 PM IST and concludes on Sunday, 5 September 2027 at 11:17 AM IST. Under the golden law of Udaya Tithi (sunrise: 06:23 AM IST), Sunday, 5 September 2027 is the authentic, universally prescribed date for observing Rushi Panchami Vrat, sacred snana, and Saptarshi Pujan.
📖 2. The Seven Sacred Sages (Saptarshis) & Mata Arundhati
The Saptarshis are cosmic mind-born sons (Manasputras) of Lord Brahma who received the eternal eternal vibrations of the Vedas and transmitted supreme spiritual sciences, astronomy, medicine (Ayurveda), and moral laws to humanity. The seven venerated sages invoked on this sacred day are:
- Maharshi Kashyapa (મહર્ષિ કશ્યપ): The cosmic progenitor from whom diverse forms of earthly life emerged.
- Maharshi Atri (મહર્ષિ અત્રિ): The seer of the Rigveda who, along with Devi Anasuya, manifested the divine trinity as Dattatreya.
- Maharshi Bharadvaja (મહર્ષિ ભારદ્વાજ): The master of advanced sciences, architecture, and sacred hymns.
- Maharshi Vishvamitra (મહર્ષિ વિશ્વામિત્ર): The royal sage who attained Brahma-jnana through fiery penance and revealed the supreme Gayatri Mantra to the world.
- Maharshi Gautama (મહર્ષિ ગૌતમ): The exponent of Nyaya philosophy and husband of Mata Ahalya.
- Maharshi Jamadagni (મહર્ષિ જમદગ્નિ): The epitome of austerities and father of Bhagwan Parashurama.
- Maharshi Vashistha (મહર્ષિ વસિષ્ઠ) & Mata Arundhati: The royal preceptor of the Solar Dynasty (Ikshvaku), accompanied by His chaste consort Arundhati, the celestial symbol of unwavering spiritual fidelity and divine devotion.

📖 4. Rajaswala Dosha Nivarana & Apamarga (Aghada) Snan Vidhi
A central spiritual pillar of Rishi Panchami is Rajaswala Dosha Nivarana (रजस्वला दोष निवारण). In ancient Vedic science, during a woman's natural menstrual cycle (Rajaswala period), subtle biological and auric cleansing occurs. Due to unavoidable circumstances, inadvertent kitchen contact, touching religious altars, or modern fast-paced living, subtle energetic impurities (*Sutak Ashuddhi*) can accumulate.
Rishi Panchami offers an egalitarian, compassionate spiritual opportunity for both women and men to cleanse all past unintentional transgressions and purify body, mind, and spirit:
- Apamarga / Aghada Herb (અપામાર્ગ - અઘેડો): Devotees collect tender twigs of the Apamarga plant (known in Gujarati as Aghedo). Traditionally, the mouth is cleaned 108 times (or 7 times symbolically) while reciting prayers for inner purification.
- Sacred Cleansing Snana: Women take a holy bath using sesame seeds (*Til*), sacred river water or Gangajal, cow dung (*Gomaya*), sacred clay from riverbeds, and Panchagavya, seeking remission from all accumulated karmic impurities.
📖 5. Unique Fasting Tradition: Samo (Moraiyo) & Unplowed Wild Produce
The dietary observance on Rishi Panchami is unique in the entire Hindu calendar:
Zero Bull-Plowed Grains Permitted: To express gratitude towards Mother Earth and farm animals (bulls and oxen), scriptures strictly forbid consuming any cereals, grains, or pulses that have been cultivated using plows or cattle labor. Wheat, rice, millet, bajra, pulses, and onions/garlic are strictly avoided.
- Samo / Moraiyo (સામા ચોખા / Samvat Rice): Devotees eat wild, self-propagating barnyard millet known as Samo or Moraiyo cooked in water or milk.
- Colocasia / Taro Leaves (અળવીના પાનનું શાક / પાતરાં): A signature monsoon delicacy prepared using naturally grown arbi leaves.
- Wild Fruits & Root Vegetables: Sweet potatoes (શક્કરિયા), raw bananas (કાચા કેળાં), fresh curd, and cow ghee are relished.
- Ekbukta (એકટાણું): Devotees take only one sattvic meal during the afternoon after completing the Saptarshi puja.
📖 6. Step-by-Step Saptarshi Puja Vidhi & Sacred Offerings
The sacred vidhi for worshiping the Seven Sages at home:
- Altar Setup: Clean a wooden chowki in the North-East direction. Smear cow dung and draw an altar. Create seven small heaps of sacred rice or draw a Sarvatobhadra Mandala.
- Placing Saptarshis & Mata Arundhati: Place seven betel nuts (supari) on the heaps to represent the 7 sages: Kashyapa, Atri, Bharadvaja, Vishvamitra, Gautama, Jamadagni, and Vashistha. Place an eighth supari adjacent to Vashistha for Mata Arundhati.
- Avahana: Invoke the rishis chanting: "Kashyapo'tri Bharadvajo Vishvamitro'tha Gautamah | Jamadagnir Vashishthashcha Saptaite Rishayah Smritah ||".
- Panchamrit & Tilak: Offer water, milk, chandan, akshat, and fragrant flowers.
- Sacred Yajnopavita (Janeu): Present white sacred threads to all seven sages and a sacred saree-cloth piece (*Chundadi*) to Mata Arundhati.
- Naivedya: Offer cooked Samo/Moraiyo kheer sweetened with jaggery and seasonal bananas.
- Aarti & Pradakshina: Wave camphor and ghee lamps while praying for health, intellectual clarity, and freedom from karmic faults.

📖 7. The Inspiring Vrat Katha & Mobile Application Download
According to the Bhavishyottara Purana, King Sitashva inquired from Lord Brahma how women could be liberated from sins committed knowingly or unknowingly during their menses. Lord Brahma narrated the tale of a pious Brahmin named Uttanka and his chaste wife Sushila. Their daughter, who became a young widow, lived an austere life on the banks of the Ganges. One day, her mother noticed ants covering her sleeping daughter's body. Distressed, Uttanka sage entered deep meditation and revealed that in her previous life, she had touched kitchen vessels and entered holy premises on the first day of her cycle without proper seclusion, and neglected to observe Rishi Panchami.
Upon the sage's instruction, the daughter devoutly observed the Rishi Panchami fast, completed the Apamarga snan, and worshiped the Saptarshis with pure devotion, thereby nullifying all past doshas and attaining heavenly grace and everlasting spiritual beauty.
